How do I start an Italian Red Wine import business?
Profitably importing alcohol of any kind is largely dependent on where you plan on importing to. Specific states and counties in the United States have different regulations regarding fees, amounts, and quality control of imported products. Check with local and state customs officials about any laws that may apply to your new import business.
Once you know the terms that apply you can start looking for a winery interested in importing through you. This may be an established brand that already has other distributors in the US or elsewhere, or it may be a growing vineyard that’s just starting to show interest in a world market. In either case they’re probably most interested in prospective buyers who can offer a constant rate of demand and good marketing.
Good marketing is one of the most important aspects of your job as an importer. You’ll have to communicate regularly with your Italian partners and the suppliers who’ll be distributing your wine. Your goal is to create a balance of price versus demand within your key demographic. Having too much product available will slow down demand and affect accumulation of product, having too little product available may frustrate buyers and cause them to seek alternative wines. Make sure that the winery you’re dealing with is equipped to handle a large increase in production should your import business be successful and demand increase.
Of course it’s important to already be familiar with the types and brands of Italian red wines already available in your area so you can properly set prices and find your market. You’ll need to know how your wine compares to others in the same price range as far as taste and quality are concerned. It’s important to keep dealings positive for everyone involved by following good business practices and both asking for and offering fair prices. If you feel confidant about your wine, ask a well-known expert for a critique. He may even publish the results and get you valuable exposure.
